Pandas on the Eastside

"I really enjoyed this book. It was a very sweet book which brought you on a journey. I would recommend this book for grade 6. Pandas on the Eastside was very nice, sweet and simple. They brought in characters which you can connect to in a small way. I would rate this book ⅘. What I didn't like about the book is that they would bring characters in once and not bring them back in again. Or they would add characters that had nothing to do with the story line.
I really enjoyed when they saw the pandas. Because they cared so much about them. It's sorta like when you have a pet you really love. I want read this book again when I can."

"This was definitely an interesting. My favourite part about it was when the girl went and asked Contrary Gary if she could have a dime. Although, Gary has a mental disorder, so she said to him “Gary, you will not give me a dime!” So he said “You cannot tell me what to do! I will give dimes to whoever I want!” he then gave her a dime, so her plan worked… but it was kind of mean. My least part of the story was when the girl begged the shop keeper for donuts. It was so annoying. I would reccomend this book to anyone in gr. 5, 6, or 7. I really enjoyed it, and would definitely read it again. My rating is… (Drumroll please!) 4.8/5!"

"Looking at the cover, title, and description of book gave me the impression of a sweet and cute story. However, once you read the book it turns out to be . . .  a sweet and cute story.

This doesn't mean that the writing of book was lazy; it's actually a 'normal' or 'common' style of writing which people enjoy. There is nothing wrong with this style of writing. Some people would rather read about friendship, hard work, a more realistic situation, problem-solving, cute, and innocent, but still interesting. Those people would find this book quite appealing, as it contains all of the following descriptions accurately. Some people however are looking for more 'serious-action-adventure' with excitement adding to the storyline in book preferences. Those people would find this book boring, because of how laid-back and simple the story is.

I would rate this book a 2.5 / 5, as it is not of my preference. The rating truly depends on the person reading it. One thing that made me rate it under a 3 wasn’t just because of my preference, but because there is three major flaws: lack of character development; over-use of adding new characters; and finally, lack of story development.

And now to explain each issue:. First off, too many characters! There is no reason to add a new character every chapter, only to forget they even existed one chapter later! If the book or series isn't going to be long, stick, with a few limited characters that are actually required! Why do we have one character for one task? Why can't a character be skilled at more than one thing? Which leads on to my next complaint: These characters have no defining personality, or even a personality to begin with! There was so much time wasted on adding characters that there was no time to give them detail; they're just shallow. Only one convenient skill which truly is overall pointless; and that's it. Of course, the story presented itself as something key to the characters and book, and that's great, all books should make their story enjoyable! But the overall simplicity made it boring after awhile. The colossal amount of characters made clear progress to fix the problem by working together and problem-solving. But the problem? Never changed, never got worse, just easily followed the characters agenda, making you ask how it had seemed like a big problem, because once the 'main character and her friends’ and apparently the good side saving pandas does something, it feels like the problem just perfectly allows them to fix it.

…I hope my criticism makes some sort of sense of how I rated it…"

"Through all the poverty and sadness Journey Song cared about those poor pandas. She cared for everyone and everything. She was very thoughtful and had sympathy for all the people who had worse lives than she did. I personally didn't really like this book because it was kind of boring to me. I think it would have been more fun to read if there was less explaining going on and more action and adventure. But, however I did like how thoughtful this author made Journey. She was very generous and kind, I hope people will try to be more like her, especially after reading this book and realizing that you can do anything with a positive attitude. I recommend this book to people who like love or sappy stories and animal books. Not really to people who like more action/adventure books like me. I rate this book a ⅖.

"I really enjoyed this book. It was very interesting and had lots of breathtaking clinchers. Sometimes it would go off topic and repeat but had powerful words that went perfectly with the sentence. The book was about a girl named Journey Song who lived through the war. When China sent 2 giant pandas across the ocean to America. Named Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing. Journey song feared that the pandas were uncomfortable living where they are. So she gets all her friends and tries to save them. Overall this book was very good. I give it a rating of 4/5."

"My book was amazing! If I were to rate this out of 5 I would rate it a 5/5. It is now my new favourite book! The book is about a girl named Journey Wind Song (her last name wasn't actually song). Journey didn't know much about herself. Her dad left when her mom found out she was pregnant with Journey. And so this is where the story started! There are pandas in China and China has sent pandas to America to a neighbourhood called the Eastside. Everyone was really excited, until they found out that they were keeping them in a warehouse. Then Journey's dad just showed up at her house! They try to make the keepers bring the pandas to a zoo or a sanctuary. If you like adventure and fantasy books then I would recommend this book to you."
