Adrift at Sea

"This was an amazing book and was really interesting but it was very short and only took 15 minutes to read, and I wish it was longer, but I would still give a 4.5/5. It was an incredible book and it really makes you appreciate what you have. This book was about Tuan’s story of escaping the Vietnam war in a boat, and I would recommend this book to a 9-10 year old."

"This book was amazing. I would read it a thousand times over. Plus it’s such an easy read! I love the ending because it brought the little boy's spirits up when the sailor gave him a glass of milk. It made me feel elated too. I would rate this book a 5/5 because the illustrations were beautiful and the story was very touching!"

"The true meaning and image this book gives me is unbelievable. It is the terrifying truth of what happens, and it makes me want to cry. The only thing I didn't like about this book was how short it was. It didn't seem like there was enough detail on it. I understood the story but it didn't feel like they had been on the ship for that long. I think it would have been even more powerful with more detail in the story itself. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy history. I give this book a ⅘."

"I did not really like this book. It did not really explain the story that well. It did not have many words. If I was to rate this book it would be a ⅖ because it did not explain the story that well. I would recommend this book to some that likes book with less words."

"The book Adrift At Sea I really like because it is based off of a real story that Tuan Ho was a part of. Tuan is the boy in the story who escaped the Vietnam war. He, escaped it with his mom, and aunt with his 2 other sisters his dad and the oldest sister escaped, a year ago. I recommend this book to grade 7s and I rate it a 5 out f 5."

"This book was short lived. It only took me about 2 minutes to read. The story is about a Vietnamese boy and his family of refugees who manage to escape Vietnam, but end up adrift at sea. It isn't very long, but it has some interesting pictures of the actual characters in the book, and it explains a little bit about the actual Vietnamese war at the back of the book. It seems a little short for somebody my grade, (grade 7) but I'd say it is pretty good. I rate this book a ⅗."

"When I started reading Adrift At Sea, I had no clue on what to expect. I didn’t think it would be a non-fiction book, but to my surprise, it was all true. To be completely honest, I would not like to have lived in those times in Vietnam. I’m glad that at the end of the book, all was resolved and they all were reunited as one family again. I’d give this book a 4.5/5 because it was kind of short, but the story to it was incredible. I would recommend this book to people that are about a year or two younger than me."

"It was okay but it looks like it was meant for people under seven. I really didn't like it, I give it a one out of five. I think by grade seven most people like to read books that are more than fifty pages long. To me this was way under my standards. It was kind of sad but at the same time it never lingers on one point, it jumps through several days by the turn of a page and gives the reader almost no information about what is going on. When I was reading this I finished it in a very short time, (less than an hour) and I couldn't get into it because of the lack of detail. I recommend this book to people who are much younger than twelve."

"I really enjoyed this book it was about a Vietnamese boy refugee. It was very interesting. At the back of the book I liked how they put the history of the Vietnam refugee and what he looks like today. I would rate this book 4/5 because it was very different and very short. The author used very descriptive words which made it more interesting. I would recommend this book to kids younger than me because it was a picture book and it wasn't very long. The illustrator waxed the oil paintings in this book I found that it made the pictures stand out more. Adrift at sea was very unique, I loved it!"

"I think that this book was very powerful. It was a book that told the raw truth of the horrid Vietnam war, and how escaping was painstakingly tough. I would definitely not want to be caught in the middle of that. Or else, I would have been scared out my own skin. They must have been so relieved to see the US aircraft carrier. If I saw it, I would have been scared out of my own skin. In my opinion, this book could have been longer, and have gone into way more detail. I found that even though the people had just been rescued, they were still selfish. No one except for the kid and his mom would bail out the water. And, all they did was sleep. If I was in that situation, I would round up a bunch of people, and we would all take shifts bailing, while the others slept. Then, they would get up and bail, and the others could have a break. That would be the most efficient way. Overall, I didn't really like this book, and I would give it a 1.5."

"I thought this book was ok. It was pretty short though. The book is about a Vietnamese war refugee. The drawings in the book look like they were painted on a canvas which look really cool to me. I recommend this book for the younger grades, because it's more of a picture book. I give this book a 3 out of 5."

"I liked Adrift but it was a really short book and I wish it was longer because I would have liked to hear more. If I were to rate this book, I would rate it a 3 out of 5 because it was short but sweet. This book made me feel thankful that I have food and water. I would recommend this book to younger kids because it was more of a picture book. It is about the Vietnamese War and is kind of cool. The family splits up making me feel thankful for still being with my family and friends. Overall, I kind of liked this book and would recommend this to people who like picture books."

"It was a picture book about the Vietnamese War. They had to use a boat to evacuate their family and go to a different country to get away from the war. The writer had the main character of the story with him. The boy who was trying to escape the war was called Tuan Ho. I love to learn about history. I felt sad because he and his family were scared for their life. I wonder what it felt like to have bullets flying over your head and only be able to drink a lid full of water. The boy’s family was saved by the USA navy. I recommend this book. It was a 4/5."
